Outcome of Campaign #1: Request for Response to Anti-queer Bias Incidents

-We wanted an official record of these anti-queer bias incidents.
We got more than that, in the walk-in service "Open Source" which offers all kinds of confidential support and listening. Without recording names, the Open Source staff is charged with directly informing the administration about the scope of bias incidents large and small. When students are willing to identify themselves, Open Source staff can tell them where to go.

-We wanted Orientation Week to include queer content.
O-week now includes a brand new video produced at U of C with students talking about their community experiences-- queer voices are an explicit part of that. Also, O-Aides are now being specifically trained to talk about queer issues.

-We wanted a speaker to come to campus and raise consciousness about homophobia in a way that wouldn't just preach to the choir.
Gender violence expert Jackson Katz came to campus on Weds, Oct 22, 2003, and gave a talk with incredible cosponsorship, indicating a very broad base of support. In particular, this event represents the first-ever formal cooperation between fraternities and queer groups on this campus. The talk packed the Kent lecture hall, the second-largest auditorium on campus.
